How did you get involved with roller derby?
I started as a referee and played my first men’s bout as a member of Team Canada in September of 2010.
How long have you been playing?
What do you love about the sport?
Big question! There is a certain vibe and community with roller derby that doesn’t exist in many sports. The fact that we can throw a track up in 15 minutes at an outdoor rink and skate a scrimmage is pretty awesome too, much like pick-up hockey and soccer. Just show up and play.
Did you have any athletic experience before roller derby?
I’ve been involved to one degree or another in competitive hockey, softball, baseball, football, soccer, running and mountain biking. I started in competitive sports with hockey in 1977 and ran my first 10k race only 3 years ago.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a senior systems administrator for a local university.

LuluDemon. That lady has come a long way and is a dynamo!
What are your strengths as a player?
Skating ability and adaptability. Being hard to knock down helps too.
What skills are you working on right now?
Finesse. I tend to play like a bull in a china shop, which is kind of fun to watch, but not fun to wake up to the next morning!
How do you like to prepare for a bout?
Visualization, focus, and nutrition. I also find that a bit of cardio before a bout helps an enormous amount.

What advice would you give to someone considering roller derby?
Get a pair of skates. Wear them in the house, wear them when you go to work, go to Lloyd’s, path skate, everything. The more comfortable you are in your skates the better your abilities will be and the better your game will be. Overall, just do it!
